About This Course

Media relations is at the heart of government communications. Our teams work every day to explain the policies and services of government departments and organisations and the media is a partner to help the public with that understanding. In this course, we will explore the methods and frameworks we use to do this well. This will include how to build and establish relationships with internal colleagues as well as with journalists, to shape and promote your news at the right time. It will give you a better understanding of media planning and working with No.10 as well as the core skills to help you respond to developing and breaking news and stories. We’ll also look at how best to use insight to make sure that we are reaching people in the right way and how we analyse our media coverage to make sure it is supporting the Government’s objectives. During the course you’ll hear from communications specialists and we’ll also dig into some detailed case studies.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Explain the core functions of a media department and how it generates effective communications outcomes
  • Understand the modern media landscape that the government works within
  • Identify key stakeholders and methodologies for building relationships with them
  • Apply principles for managing, shaping, and responding to media enquiries
  • Describe how to strategise for a planned media announcement
  • Create content which effectively positions your message
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of your media communications
